McCall Day 2 & Recommendations for Day 3

A beautiful day in McCall for the first World Masters skate races.  Hard pack trail made for easy waxing and fast conditions.  See inside for Recommendations for Monday.

The weather forecast looks good for Monday's races and it should be much easier waxing than it was Saturday.  Cold overnight warming quickly to around freezing could make classic waxing a bit tricky, but the large amount of snow on the ground should hold its temperature throughout the day, moderating the rapid changes in air temperature.

We tested a lot of waxes and structures today.  Swix and Toko were running fast, but Swix was clearly the winner as things warmed.  Early Sunday, we had people on Swix HF7/FC7, with later skiers on HF8/FC8.  Anyone who had a Q1.3 loved it today and we did not add any structure to that grind.  For finer grinds, we found a light crossing structure put on with a structure box added speed in the later races.

For tomorrow, we expect Swix HF6 and HF7 to be the waxes.  We are testing waxes from other companies as well and will decide on the top coat after testing.  We will ski the course this afternoon to get a better idea of what the classic track will look like Monday morning.  It could be icy and hard, but it is also likely to be cold and powdery with some icy snow mixed in.  We're going to hold off on classic wax until the morning after we've tested.  It will either be straight hard wax (probable) or klister covered (less likely).
