Skin Ski Care Tips

Boulder Nordic & Cycle Sport Staff

Congratulations on your purchase of skin skis! Welcome to the easiest waxing that you have ever known. Skins typically last between 1-4 years and are replaceable. The more you ski on your skis the more the skins will wear perfectly to your weight and skiing style. At some point your skins will wear down enough to have to be replaced, don’t worry BNS stocks skins for all of the skis we carry. Here are some tips for caring for your skin skis for maximum performance:

  • Always keep your skins clean. There are several different products for this, we suggest the Rode Skin Kit with cleaner and wax.
  • Skins should be cleaned whenever dirty snow, pitch or klister is present. When in doubt give them a quick clean.
  • Even if clean snow, clean skins for every 3-5 hours of use.
  • Keeping the skins clean will help them last significantly longer.
  • The skins need love too in the form of a skin wax. It will also serve as an anti-ice solution for the skins.
  • Do NOT spray the cleaner or wax directly on the skins, spray on a lint free rag and wipe in direction of travel down the skins a couple of times.
  • Do NOT heat wax into your skins please. The skin wax is meant to be rubbed on or squeezed on in a liquid form. Skins are put on the skis with a special adhesive that heating with an iron can break down.
  • The tips and tails of your skin skis can be waxed like any other ski with regular glide wax.
