Winter Training TipsIf you're serious about cycling, you should be training year round. We'll give you some tips for how to train in the off season as a cyclist!
We live in a place where we're lucky enough to have cycling year round (almost). In Boulder, we can almost always find dry roads or trails that aren't too muddy, even if it means driving an hour or two. However, driving to clear roads or trails isn't always reasonable, and there are certainly days where you'll need to get creative. Here are some suggestions for your winter training.
In general, winter is all about building base for your summer cycling goals. That means packing in long distance rides and increasing your training volume. Lots of cyclists brave the cold and sub-optimal road conditions all winter, and some have specialized winter bikes. That allows you to keep your nice bike nice, using a slightly older or spec'd down bike for winter riding. Mudguards and extra grippy tires go a long way toward making your winter riding experience more enjoyable on these bikes.
It's not difficult to see that indoor trainers are a great tool to have in the winter months. These are great for building fitness, getting in solid workouts, and can allow you to catch up on your favorite Netflix series.
Winter can be a great time to give your legs and back a break and do some extra cross-training. Depending on what level you're at, about half your weekly hours should be spent on a bike or trainer. One of the best cross-training workouts you can get is cross-country skiing, which we just happen to know a little bit about! Along with cycling, skiing is one of the most aerobically intensive sports out there, and it requires a combination of cardiovascular endurance, strength, and technique. Though skiing can take some time to learn, there really is no better winter workout.
If you don't want to give cross-country skiing a try, backcountry skiing, running, swimming, and rock climbing are all good off-season activities. They'll help you recover from a long summer of riding, give your body something new to adapt to, and help you build strength in both your lower and upper body. That will all translate to riding come spring!
