Road Bike Pedal Options
In our newsletter last week, we talked about the different pedal options available for mountain bikers. This week, we'll switch it up and talk to you about the options available for road bikes.
Since road bikes are all about pedal efficiency, you won't find flat road pedals anywhere. For commuting these can still be a viable option, but for true road biking the focus is on watts, which means you'll be clipping in. For the same reason, you won't typically find any float on a road pedal. This is because the locked-in position translates to a more efficient pedal stroke and, therefore, more power. From there it's all about getting lighter. High end road pedals will be made out of carbon to keep them as light and stiff as possible. Lower end pedals are usually alloy or composite to keep costs low.
So what options do you have when it comes to road bike pedals? The tried and true Shimano SPD is what we sell most in the shop. These pedals are reliable and come in a wide range of price options. Starting at just $65, you can get a solid road pedal that uses Shimano's clipless system. As you work your way up Shimano's line you'll get lighter pedals with better bearings.
Even though Shimano is the main brand we carry and sell in the shop, we have a couple other options in stock, too. Wahoo makes a great clipless road pedal. They tend to run a bit lighter than Shimano and offer tons of adjustability. Unlike most road pedals, these do offer up to 15 degrees of float, which can be great for people with knee problems or those who like that feel.
Look and Time are two other tried and true road pedal brands, and they each have their own strengths and weaknesses. We don't typically stock these brands in the shop, but we can order either of them easily. Stop in or give us a call at (303)444-BIKE, (303)444-2453 if you want more info!
