Liquid Waxes: Fast, Simple, Affordable
Without a doubt, waxing technology has changed significantly in recent years. Liquid paraffins are one of our favorites among the new product categories that have emerged during this period. Affordable, effective, and easy to apply, these liquid glide waxes are a big benefit of the rapidly evolving fluor-free ski wax environment.
Liquid waxes have been around for a while, but recent developments in solvents that coincided with the transition away from fluorocarbons made them much more effective and durable. Today's liquid waxes are much less expensive than their predecessors and help keep your skis running fast between hot wax applications. They also give skis a great speed boost for racing but are affordable enough to use in everyday training.
One of the biggest benefits of liquid waxes is the ease and speed of application. Liquid waxes can be applied almost anywhere with just a few tools and minimal cleanup is required. For a simple application, brush the ski with a metal brush, apply the liquid, let it "dry", then brush with a nylon or horsehair brush. In a pinch, you can skip the brushing. Advanced techniques for application exist, too, and they are pretty simple as well. If you want to squeeze more speed out of your wax job read Roger's notes below.
If possible, apply the product at least the night before skiing, and then buff and brush it out in the morning. Application and storage at room temperature is ideal. The longer the wax is on the ski, the better the durability and speed.
One final note: liquid waxes should not completely replace hot waxing! We still recommend hot waxing your skis every 3-5 sessions to ensure the protection of your bases. Skis that are not hot waxed with some frequency will begin to slow noticeably and base damage could even occur.
If you haven't jumped on the liquid glide wax train, it's time to climb on board.
