Getting into Gravel??

Gravel Bike Tire Options
Alright, we've covered MTB and road tire options, so what's next? Obviously gravel tires, right?? We've seen gravel riding take off over the last few years, and for good reason. It can combine the speed of road riding with the technicality of mountain biking. In short, it's a great time.

So what tires are out there that can give you both the speed and grip you need for this unique type of riding? It turns out, just like with other types of riding, there are a few things to consider.

The first thing to think about is whether you value speed or grip more. Just like with MTB tires, the narrower and faster rolling options will provide you with easy speed and help you pedal faster. Wider tires will provide more grip but be a bit slower, especially on the road. A narrow gravel tire would be anything from around 32c-35c. Wide gravel tires can be all the way up to 45c.

What about tread? There are all kinds of tread patterns out there, and it again just depends on what you want out of your ride. For those looking for a fast ride, a racing slick like the WTB Byway is a great option. These tires are wider than a typical road tire, and feature a fast-rolling center tread pattern but grippier cornering lugs.

For those looking to ride more technical gravel or singletrack, go with something nobbier. The Maxxis Rambler and Panaracer GravelKing roll a bit slower than racing slicks and feature cornering nobs that resemble those on XC mountain bike tires. These tires are great when it gets technical. Just like with MTB tires, you should also consider going tubeless on your gravel bike to eliminate pinch flats and save a little extra weight.

If you have any questions on gravel tires, stop by or give us a call at (303)444-BIKE, or (303)444-2453. Our helpful staff is sure to find the perfect tire setup for you!

Chain Lube Overview
No matter what kind of riding you're into, there are a few things you can do at home to make sure you keep your ride running smoothly. The single most important thing you can do is lube your chain consistently.

Chain lube does exactly what you would expect- it reduces friction on your drivetrain, improving its longevity and improving the quality of your shifting. There are two main types of lube available, named for the conditions they work best in. Dry lube works best in dry conditions, while wet lube flourishes in, well, wet conditions. There are lubes out there designed to work in both sets of conditions, and any lube is better than no lube. If you're getting something for the Front Range, dry lube is definitely the way to go!

Once you have your lube, all you need to do is apply it. There are tons of videos out there, but you'll just need your lube and a rag. Apply the lube to your chain, shift through each gear at least once, and then wipe off the excess lube with a rag. Doing this every time you ride isn't too much, but lubing up every 2-3 rides can be sufficient depending on conditions.

Rock n Roll makes a set of products that we love at the shop! Rock n Roll Gold or Extreme are our favorites for riding around Boulder. Their products are both chain cleaners and lubes, so you can easily keep your drivetrain running well with just one product. We have lots of other options in stock provided by Tri-Flow, Holmenkol, Muc-Off, Squirt (pictured) and more. Stop by either of our locations to stock up on chain lube for your bike! Your bike will thank you.
