Soooo... What's A Downcountry Bike?
If you've been mountain biking for any amount of time, you probably already know the difference between an XC race bike, a trail bike, and a downhill bike, right? If not, XC bikes tend to be short-travel (around 100mm) and built for climbing and carrying speed. Trail and enduro bikes are usually between 130mm and 170mm of rear travel, and geared toward making the climbs manageable and the descents fun, depending on where your bike falls in that range. Downhill bikes usually have between 180 and 200mm of rear travel and, as their name suggests, are built for going downhill.

But these categorizations are too broad sometimes, and they don't tell us too much about the character of the bike, especially for bikes that fall between the XC and trail categories. Some people love the term, some people hate it, but more and more companies are starting to design downcountry bikes.

These bikes are usually rocking 120mm of travel in the rear and either 120mm or 130mm in the front. The geometry, again, falls right between XC and trail, meaning these bikes will climb better than the average trail bike but descend better than the average XC bike. For riders looking for a good balance between speed on the uphills and fun on the downhills, these can be a great option! They've grown in popularity over the last couple of seasons, especially in the front range where riding tends to be slightly more XC-focused.

At BCS, we stock several bikes that would fall into this category, including the Scott Spark and the Intense Sniper T pictured here. This Sniper T happens to be on sale this week! We have several size options available at our North Boulder location, so stop in today to check out this or one of our other downcountry bikes!

Hydration is the Key to Victory
At least, that's what one of my coaches told me at a camp in high school. I'm not sure that's completely true, but it certainly is important. If you're curious about the options that are out there, we're here to help!

For mountain biking, the two main options are bottles or a bladder. Or bottles and a bladder ( the B&B method). There's nothing wrong with a couple of high-quality bike bottles. They're easy to clean and easy to refill, but they can usually only hold between half and three-quarters of a liter of water. Some mountain bikes have room for two bottles, which is usually enough to ride for at least a few hours without a refill, but most full suspension frames can only hold one of these bottles.

Bladders offer much more carrying capacity than a water bottle, usually holding at least a liter, but up to three liters. Because of the extra carrying capacity, these don't need to be refilled as often. However, they can be a little harder to clean and can get pretty gross if you don't do that enough.

Some of the hip packs we carry, like the Osprey Seral 7 shown here, include a bladder or a place to carry a water bottle. Otherwise, there are lots of size options available for more traditional-looking backpacks with bladders.

For road biking, few riders use hip packs or bladders. These options are nowhere near as aero as carrying bottles, and most road frames can easily fit two bottles, making larger packs unnecessary. Plus, it's a lot easier to stop at a coffee shop or gas station to refill your water while road biking.

We have a couple of these Seral 7 packs left in stock, plus a ton of other hydration options at both of our Boulder locations. Stop in and check them out today!
