Fall Layering Systems
Whether you're commuting or road biking, racing triathlons or putting in miles on your mountain bike, it's time to start thinking about your layering systems. Cold weather is rapidly approaching, which means you'll need to start thinking a little more about what you wear while riding.
One of the lightest layers you can add to your cycling kit is a pair of arm warmers. These add just a little warmth, and can easily be stashed if you get too warm at any point in your ride. The same goes for leg warmers. If you only buy two pieces of warm kit, we recommend starting here.
When it gets a little colder, thinking about baselayers becomes important. These come in a wide variety of materials and thicknesses, so it can be hard to know where to start. We recommend starting out with one relatively warm, thick baselayer and one thin, breathable baselayer. Adding something in the middle is nice if you find yourself cycling in the cold a lot.
Once you've put together a good set of baselayers, it's time to start thinking about tights and jackets. Tights are fantastic when it's extra cold or windy, and often contain wind-resistant fabric in important locations... Having a medium-weight pair of tights is handy and versatile, but if you find yourself frequently riding below 40°F, a thicker pair can be nice to have as well.
For jackets, use the same basic philosophy when you're starting out, with one light and one heavy layer. Light jackets can make a huge difference if it's windy but not too cold, while thicker jackets can make it possible to ride even in the coldest temperatures. Some jackets are wind-resistant, others are water-resistant, and others are both. We usually look for jackets that offer protection from both wind and water, just to be safe.
Finally, gloves and overshoes can be added when it gets extra cold. Usually, it's nice to have a few pairs of gloves for different temperature ranges, but overshoes are a little more universal. Unless you find yourself riding in these in a wide range of conditions, we usually recommend getting one warm pair for when the weather is really bad.

The Pinarello Dogma is the flagship road bike for this Italian brand. It's a great bike, but it starts at a price point that just isn't reasonable for many riders. Last year, the Prince was Pinarello's answer for those riders looking for the ride quality and characteristics of the Dogma at a more accessible price point.
The Prince features technical characteristics and performance standards that still outperform much higher-end road bikes, making the Prince a real alternative to the Dogma F12. This bike has the same cable integration system as the Dogma, giving it a major aerodynamic advantage compared to other bikes at the same price. This build features a full Shimano Ultegra Di2 drivetrain and disc brakes to keep your ride feeling smooth.
We have two size 58s left in our shop in North Boulder, so stop by and check them out if you're in the market for a new road bike!
